Streamlining UK operations for a leading quarry operator in Mozambique: a compliance success story (Case Study)

A leading quarry operator in Mozambique (MQP), was referred to me for guidance on how to enhance governance for their smaller UK subsidiary and stay compliant with UK regulations.

Through our collaboration, MQP implemented effective internal systems and processes in the UK, resulting in improved operations, regulatory compliance, and a seamless transition to a new local team member.

The background

MQP is a prominent quarry operator based in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. Renowned for their high-quality stone products and sustainable mining practices, MQP has established a strong presence in their local market.

Enhancing governance and operational compliance – the opportunity

MQP saw the chance to make their governance activities easier and stay in line with UK regulations through my existing partnership with their managing company. The goal was to streamline and make processes more transparent for investors, enhancing their market reputation.

But the company faced the complex task of dealing with UK regulations, working with many stakeholders, and setting up effective internal processes, which needed specialised expertise and management to make it all run smoothly.

The steps taken

I implemented a comprehensive operational management plan to address MQP’s needs:

  • Developed and executed a detailed project plan with clear timelines using the Asana tool, ensuring structured progress tracking and accountability.
  • Held weekly progress updates with the Group Financial Director to maintain alignment and address emerging issues promptly.
  • Regulatory compliance:
    • Coordinated activities with HMRC for the group investors to ensure UK tax compliance.
    • Executed all necessary activities with Companies House for the UK limited company.
  • Met regulatory requirements by sourcing and onboarding specialist services, such as mandatory insurance, registered address forwarding, banking services, and software solutions.
  • Successfully handed over operations to a newly hired local team member, ensuring continuity and sustained compliance at the end of the two-year project.

The outcome

Our partnership led to significant improvements for MQP:

  • Established robust internal systems and processes, ensuring MQP met all UK regulatory requirements.
  • Reduced operational complexities and costs through streamlined procurement and compliance activities.
  • Successfully transitioned responsibilities to a local team member, ensuring continued compliance in the UK.
  • Positioned MQP for wider opportunities in the UK and beyond through enhanced operational transparency.

This case study showcases how my operations management services can help businesses achieve good compliance and operational excellence in the UK market.
