4 tips to help you make it to the end of Dry January

Are you still on track with Dry January this year? Well done you.

As someone who’s on the road to a healthier relationship with alcohol, I’ve picked up a few tips and tricks along the way that can help you stick it out until the end of the month – and potentially even the rest of the year – with ease.

1. Find support from friends and family

When you’re giving up alcohol for Dry January or trying to stay sober, having your friends and family behind you can provide the encouragement and motivation you need when it feels tough.

It goes without saying, but this also means staying away from people and situations that will trigger your urge to indulge. I know, work is hard, and sometimes all you want is a large glass of red at the end of the week. But you can do it – all will definitely be worth it in the end!

2. Try new alcohol-free hobbies

In embracing a more sober lifestyle, I’ve discovered the joy of trying new hobbies without relying on alcohol for entertainment. Which can be a bit of a challenge, now that everything seems to be a “sip and something”.

Personally, I’m going down the creative route and have tried all sorts, from group painting sessions and an embroidery circle to a mini creative writing course. These hobbies give me a way to be creative and connect with people who I might not meet otherwise.

3. Embrace low- and no-alcohol bevvies

It’s safe to say that the booze-free options on the shelves have come a long way. There are more and more options for low-alcohol drinks beyond just mocktails and alcohol-free beers, like craft botanicals, kombucha and fermented teas.

I’ve grown to love non-alcoholic beers as pretty decent substitutes for regular drinks – non-alcoholic wine, on the other hand? The jury’s still out on that one.

Whether I’m out with friends or unwinding after a long day, these alternatives let me enjoy the experience without feeling left out or tempted. And best of all, no headaches the next morning! I’m getting old, so hangovers come on faster and don’t pass as quickly. 🙁

4. Treat yourself

Annoyingly, we usually connect fun with alcohol, but that doesn’t have to be the case. I’ve discovered countless ways to treat myself and have a blast without a drop of alcohol. For example:

  • Booking myself in for a massage
  • Going to an immersive theatre performance
  • Taking myself out for a solo lunch date
  • Seeing a new exhibition
  • and many more…

Instead of assembling the gang for drinks, why not challenge yourself to think outside the box and find new things to do without relying on alcohol? The key is to find what works for you and keep yourself motivated.

Cheers to a successful Dry January and a healthier, happier you!
